The Aquarium Equipment List

Equipment, Gadgets, and Supplies You Will Need to Set Up Your New Fish Tank

(The First Tank Guide)

This list of equipment and supplies includes a variety of pieces of gear that you may want, need, or have questions about regarding your new fish tank. Often, even experienced aquariists will have questions about pieces of equipment that they have not used before, or that they have little experience with. This aquarium equipment list includes categories of equipment for use in or with a fish tank. Selecting a link will take you to a page within or a section of the First Tank Guide with information about that type of or piece of equipment.

What you need:

Things in this section of the list are things that are absolutely necessary to keep fish indoors. Anything else is superfluous and dependent on what kind of a set up you want to maintain.

Things you probably want:

Things in this section of the list are things that most people will want for their system. Though other people will probably say that some or all of these things are necessary, I would argue that they are dependent on what kind of a set up you want to maintain. I know that I am going to get flamed for saying this, but (not that I recommend it or think it is a good idea) plain goldfish can be kept at room temperature in a glass bowl successfully for quite some time (though this is cruel and will increase risk of disease and increase the maintenance required to keep your fish...).

Extras you may want, but don't necessarily need:

Things in this section of the list are things that are not at all necessary to keep fish indoors. Many of these things will make your tank easier to maintain, more aesthetically pleasing, or better suited to more extravagant creatures.
